ASP provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation — bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. Appalachia Service Project is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair and replacement in Central Appalachia.

The Fellowship Program is structured in a way that focuses on personal, professional, and vocational development while serving families and volunteers in Appalachia. Fellows live in an intentional community and serve side-by-side in the mission of eradicating substandard housing. The impact they make goes far beyond their own efforts as they work within our Home Repair and/or New Build and Disaster Recovery teams to transform the lives of volunteers, homeowners, communities, and more. All year long Fellows are surrounded by the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the stillness of small communities, and a supportive environment that allows them to really listen to God’s call.

General Responsibilities
Provide new home construction for families living in substandard housing with the goal of making homes warmer, safer and dryer.
Manage project budgets and track expenses, while upholding the organization’s philosophies of safety, sensitivity, and stewardship.
Supervise multiple new home construction projects through the Fellowship term while adhering to high quality standards, local and state codes, and a strict budget.
Lead transformational mission trip experiences for colleagues, contractors, volunteers, and community members, through the practice of clear and effective communication.
Operate out of Johnson City, TN, but serve anywhere in East TN (primarily Washington, Sullivan, Hancock Counties or WV (primarily Kanawha County or Greenbrier County)
Day to Day Responsibilities
Supervise and document construction worksite to ensure quality construction for all New Build houses.
Facilitate material ordering and delivery, with a heavy focus on relationship building with our suppliers and contractors.
Provide excellent customer service to homeowners and contractors.
Remaining flexible with short term plans, staying alert and prepared for changes in the day-to-day
fluctuation of the construction process.
Code and submit invoices from suppliers and subcontractors.
Update internal spreadsheets and resources to track receipts and budget spending.
Haul materials and equipment to worksites utilizing ASP trailers, dump trucks and box trucks –
prior experience helpful but not required
Operate skid steer for grading and site work – prior experience helpful but not required
Schedule inspections with local and state inspectors
Document every stage in construction (pictures and calendars)
Finance Management Items:
Set up, manage, and report on all ASP accounts with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors.
Manage all volunteer finance paperwork.
Work with supervisor(s) to manage program’s funds, submitting thorough, complete, and timely
reports/updates/finance packets to the Accounting Department as required.
Work with Accounting Department to ensure accurate and timely reporting for reimbursement of
all grant paperwork and invoices.
Manage all ASP merchandise sales and volunteer financial transactions, maintaining an inventory
of all merchandise
Manage center’s checkbooks, debit and credit cards, and all receipts.
Track all outgoing money daily by processing receipts, bills, invoices, and verifying online banking information.
Communicate with suppliers, vendors, Program Coordinator(s), field staff, and ASP’s Accounting Department to ensure accurate, timely billing and invoicing.
Ensure invoice accuracy by double-checking signatures, administrative paperwork, descriptions, codes, house numbers, and any other requisite information for payment.
Review weekly financial management report for accuracy and budget adherence.
Ensure completion of all vendor/supplier subcontracts, documentation, and verifications required
before any payments are released, communicating with supervisor(s) as necessary.
Ensure collection and completion of all vendor/supplier/contractor paperwork and qualification
forms, including but not limited to W9 forms, Contractor’s Licenses, Release of Liens forms,
insurance requirements, and any other paperwork necessary before checks/payments are released.
Work with vendors, field staff and Accounting Department to ensure all invoices, bills, and
expenses are coded correctly.
Ensure timely payment of all bills and invoices.
Any other appropriate duties, responsibilities that arise as program expands and develops.
Case Management Items (potentially):
Manage and collect all necessary homeowner documentation for case files and grant compliance.
Collect, record, and submit all photos, information, verifications, and any other
reporting/recording necessary for ASP procedures and funding sources, managing timely
submission and completion with all staff for all cases.
Ensure thorough and complete grant pre-qualification of all clients and projects before
construction begins, working with field staff as needed.
Compile and maintain a thorough, complete, detailed Homes Book for all construction
operations.
Work with all staff to follow through with timely notification to each potential client
visited/assessed, providing regular, professional communication regarding status, procedures,
schedules, and timelines.
Meet with clients to gather all preferences for customizable project items, communicating these to
Construction Superintendent and all staff as needed.
Work with field staff to ensure all subcontracts are signed and collected, all licenses and
necessary subcontractor administrative paperwork is on file, and all subcontract Notices to
Proceed are completed.
Ensure timely completion and submission of all post-construction paperwork and grant reporting.
Complete, manage, submit, and post building permit applications and permits as needed in
coordination with field staff.
Communicate with partner organizations and other case managers to ensure the needs of all
shared clients are met.
Maintain a clean, professional, and efficient office environment, overseeing and delegating tasks
to all staff as needed.
Other:
Any other appropriate duties, responsibilities that arise as program expands and develops.
Any other duties assigned by supervisor to ensure the smooth running operations of ASP’s
mission in the field.
Candidate Description
The ideal candidate is someone with a passion for service and a dedication to personal growth.
- Must be 18 years old and at least one year removed from high school
- Willing to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications
- Strong desire to live and work in an ecumenical Christian environment
- Demonstrate respect, empathy, specificity, and genuineness
- Desire to live simply as part of an intentional community
- Must have a satisfactory background check and driving record
- Excellent communication skills
- The desire to participate in a vocational discernment program and support others as they discern their call
- To keep an open mind toward others
- Be committed to serving the entire term of the program. Typically, the program begins in May and ends the following May
Compensation
Fellows will receive a bi-weekly stipend, housing, and access to an ASP vehicle for work use. Fellows also receive a separate amount for R&B to cover incidentals while travelling to assist with those additional expenses. Compensation is intentionally set at a similar level to many of the families that Fellows will serve. It is enough to live on, but also a challenge to live simply. Additionally, ASP will provide you with a private bedroom and shared living space that includes all utilities, WiFi, and cable. We offer training in a Fellow’s specialization and personal mentoring to help them reach personal, professional, and spiritual goals. Fellows receive 5 vacation days in addition to holidays observed by the main office in Johnson City.
